About DV-MRT

Domestic Violence Moral Reconation Therapy (DV-MRT) is a subset of Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT). Both DV-MRT and MRT use cognitive-behavioral techniques and a focus on moral reasoning to create powerful and lasting positive change by helping participants improve their decision-making and moral reasoning skills.

MRT was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Greg Little and Dr. Ken Robinson and was first implemented in 1987 at the Shelby County Corrections Center in Tennessee. Years later, a version of MRT that focused on domestic violence offenders was implemented, and DV-MRT was born.

DV-MRT works to help DV offenders examine their thoughts, improve decision-making skills, change their behavior, and create peace in their homes and relationships. This program helps give offenders the opportunity to make sense of their past and move more positively into their future. While DV-MRT is focused on reducing domestic violence recidivism, it also aims to provide a more affordable solution to domestic violence treatment.

To break the cyclical nature of domestic violence and explore more affordable domestic violence therapy options, the Washington State Supreme Court Gender and Justice Commission called for an evaluation of DV-MRT programs. Washington State University published its evaluation on court-sponsored DV-MRT treatment, which found that overall, the outcome of DV-MRT programs is positive and that the program reduces the likelihood of reconviction for domestic violence offenses.
